How can the roofing industry improve?

“How Can the Roofing Industry Improve?”
It was a long winter, and we’re pumped up about 2014. At Bakeris Roofing, we’re always trying to improve what we do. That’s why we’re asking you: what can we do better? What would you like to see as a homeowner that the roofing industry needs to improve upon?
It could be something like a contractor who keeps telling you that he has insurance when he really doesn’t. The roofing industry needs people that take care of the homeowner—if someone says they will do something, they dang well better do it.
Those are the kinds of things that we want to know at Bakeris Roofing. We want homeowners to feel at ease, knowing that they hired the right contractor. Also, this year I plan to pursue legislation to make sure our local government has clear rules that help protect homeowners. Currently, contractors don’t need a permit when tearing down roofs. I think they should, because it will ultimately help homeowners.
Laws like that one would cut out all the fly-by-night contractors that try to stay under the radar and cut corners at the homeowner’s expense. They don’t have general liability insurance or workman’s comp. If those employees visit your house, it could become a serious issue.
Our friends in the roofing industry from other regions have stricter guidelines they need to follow. These guidelines prevent shady contractors from taking advantage of homeowners. As a contractor, I want to see the roofing industry step up to the plate and do something about it. I’m going to take action by contacting legislators to get things changed. I need my fellow roofing contractors to jump on board as well. Contractors are well-aware of how the roofing industry is getting harder and harder as far as small business is concerned. We make sure we adhere to all the stringent requirements of OSHA and insurance.
As a homeowner, what do you think needs to change in the roofing industry so you are better protected? What do you think needs to be done so contractors will meet your standards? How can we get rid of the bad apples that lower the bar on the roofing industry? If we can work together to make the necessary changes this industry needs, everyone will benefit. Let’s take the initiative in the central Iowa area and set a high standard.
