Continuing Safety Training at Bakeris Roofing
Before the day starts every morning at Bakeris Roofing, we have what we call tailgate meetings in the construction room. Let’s say that we’re working on installing a new roof in a client’s house. We’ll discuss any issues that may be coming up, what section we’re going to be working on, and any safety considerations we should be paying attention to.
Maybe there’s a picket fence close to the house, below where we’re working. We’ll discuss scaffolding and braces/plywood placed over the pickets to protect from falls. One of the main focuses of our tailgate meeting is to make sure we are all as safe as possible with the work we do.
During this past wintertime when we couldn’t go on the roofs as often, we brought in OSHA certification people to renew our certificate and make sure proper safety practices were in the forefront of our minds. Additionally, we trained regarding proper safety equipment. In reality, there are many fall protection devices being sold at big box stores that don’t provide adequate protection. They may be suitable for a homeowner who uses them once for a small job, but not for someone who uses them on a daily basis.
We make sure that our equipment is rugged and high-quality. Our safety equipment is dragging across the roof constantly, so we do daily inspections to make sure it’s in good condition. We don’t want to have any injuries occur that would have been preventable with proper training or protection.
Unfortunately, construction involves a higher percentage of risks (especially when working high above ground level). We can never do enough training to make sure our team is well-prepared. I truly believe that successful companies out there, even in the tech industry (like Apple, Microsoft or Facebook) are training their teams so they will do an incredible job. Either you neglect training and pay the consequences or you train and eventually reap the benefits.
