Why are you nominating this person?: |
I’m writing in hopes that you will consider my uncle for the free room promotion. His name is Ed Egenberger, he is 62 years old, and is one of the kindest, most unselfish people I know. He is a 20 year army vet that takes care of everyone else’s needs before every considering his own. My uncle has always been a positive constant in my life but as an adult I started noticing his care of others when my dad got cancer in January 2014. My dad owned his own service business and uncle Ed stepped up to be his support. He worked as an assistant to a building contractor and quit his job to help my dad through his illness. In July 2014 my dad lost his battle with cancer. My uncle stepped up to close my dad’s business, which was a huge undertaking. Since 2014 my uncle has been there every step of the way for my mom (his sister). He has taken care of all property needs, repairs, and maintainence, as my mom is handicapped. For the past 3 or 4 years Ed also became the support for an aging handicapped veteran (old Mike) and his wife. Not only did Ed run all of their errands and took care of their yard maintenance, he transported old Mike to all of his doctor appointments until his death from cancer in early 2021. As he was being the support for my mom and old Mike, Ed also lost his stepmom (Barbara) in December 2020 to a heart attack. This left his 82 year old dad in Phoenix alone with no family, so Ed made 6 trips in 8 months back and forth from Des Moines to Arizona to check on and finally move his dad here to live with him. My grandpa (Ed’s dad) had to have his leg amputated in October 2020, soon after coming to Des Moines. Even though Ed’s home desperately needs a new roof, he spent his money to ready his home for an additional bathroom with walk in shower instead of a tub to accommodate his dad’s needs. Unfortunately, he lost his dad December 22 this past 2020. Ed is still spending time helping, working and supporting various friends, family, and neighbors while his own home projects remain in need. I asked him recently if he had ever gotten his roof repaired yet, his comment was “no” and he was just hoping for no rain because he now had 2 rooms in his house with leaks. He said he wasn’t going to have the time or funds to repair it until probably early fall. I hope that you find my uncle as deserving as I do and pick him to be the person awarded with the new Bakeris roof for his unwavering, support and help to others, while putting his needs on hold to make sure everyone else has been taken care of. Thank you for your consideration, Charitie Schaer |
