Best Roofing Companies in Des Moines, Iowa (2026)

Roof replacement on a Des Moines, Iowa home

Search "roofing companies Des Moines" and you'll get pages of ads, lead-generation sites that sell your phone number to four contractors at once, and top-10 lists written by people who've never set foot in Iowa. Meanwhile, your roof sits under some of the hardest residential weather in the country: spring hail, 60+ mph straight-line summer winds, January ice dams, and the long tail of the 2020 derecho. Des Moines homeowners deserve a straight answer about who actually does good work here.

So here it is: eleven roofing companies worth your call in 2026, ranked with real data and honest trade-offs. Yes, we put ourselves on the list. We also show exactly how we ranked everyone, so you can check our math.

How we ranked these

This list isn't pay-to-play. Nobody on it paid to be here, and we have no referral arrangement with any of them. We pulled every company's live Google rating and review count in June 2026 and weighed four things:

  1. Google rating and review volume. A 4.9 across 500 reviews collected over years means more than a 5.0 across twelve reviews collected the month after a hailstorm. Volume plus consistency is the signal.
  2. Verifiable credentials. BBB ratings and manufacturer certifications like Owens Corning Platinum Preferred and GAF Master Elite. These require audits of real installs and warranty claims history. They are earned, not bought.
  3. Years in business and local accountability. Storm chasers don't stick around to honor a workmanship warranty. An Iowa office you can drive to matters.
  4. Whether they actually work Des Moines proper. Not "the metro" in a vague way. The city, from Sherman Hill to the South Side to Beaverdale.

We didn't rank by who runs the most ads. Plenty of solid roofers barely advertise.

1. Bakeris Roofing

4.9 stars, 570+ Google reviews

Bakeris has been roofing Des Moines since 1990. That's 36 years, family-owned the whole time, with Jeff Bakeris still running it. No private equity, no out-of-state ownership, no rebranding every few years to outrun bad reviews. Half the crew lives in the metro, and the company has put roofs on everything from Sherman Hill Victorians to new builds on the South Side, so they know exactly how 1960s decking fails differently than 1990s decking.

The credentials hold up to checking. Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, which is the top 1% of OC contractors nationwide and comes with access to the strongest residential warranty OC offers. BBB A+ rated, accredited since 2000. And a 4.9 average across 570+ Google reviews that climbed steadily over years, not in bursts after storms.

The other thing worth saying: Bakeris doesn't oversell. Free inspections on roof replacements and storm damage, and if your roof needs a $400 fix instead of an $18,000 tear-off, that's what they'll tell you. Roof repairs run a $98 service-call fee that gets credited toward the work if you move forward. Main office in Runnells with a satellite at 1809 Park Ave in Des Moines, and a 60-mile service radius that covers every neighborhood in the city.

2. Heartland Roofing, Siding, and Solar

4.8 stars, 650+ Google reviews

Heartland carries the largest review count in the metro, and that's not an accident. They're a Des Moines-based full-exteriors company doing roofing, siding, and solar, which makes them a strong call if you're bundling projects or planning a solar conversion after a replacement. The trade-off cuts the usual way: one company managing more of the project, versus a dedicated roofing specialist on a roof-only job. Get quotes from both and compare.

3. Recon Roofing & Construction

4.9 stars, 570+ Google reviews

Recon works out of downtown Des Moines on SW 5th Street and has built one of the strongest review profiles in the city, with heavy experience in storm restoration and insurance work. For homeowners inside the city core, they're one of the most-reviewed options with an office you can actually drive to. Worth a call for a competing bid on any replacement or storm claim.

4. Walter Roofing

5.0 stars, 430+ Google reviews

A perfect 5.0 across 430+ reviews is genuinely hard to do, and Walter's Des Moines location on Hickman Road in Clive has done it. They're an Iowa company with multiple offices around the state. The flat 5.0 with real volume says their crews communicate well and clean up after themselves, which is most of what separates a good roofing experience from a bad one.

5. Superstorm Roofing & Siding

4.9 stars, 360 Google reviews

Based in Waukee on the west side of the metro, Superstorm is built around what the name says: storm restoration, roofing, and siding. If you're working an insurance claim after hail or wind, that focus shows in how they document damage. West-metro homeowners get the fastest response, but they work the whole Des Moines area.

6. Right Roofing & Siding

4.9 stars, 340+ Google reviews

Urbandale-based and GAF Master Elite certified, which is GAF's top tier, roughly the equivalent of Owens Corning's Platinum program. If you specifically want a GAF system on your house (Timberline HDZ is the popular pick), Right is the metro contractor most plugged into that ecosystem, with the extended GAF warranty options that come with the certification. They handle siding too, which matters on storm claims where hail didn't stop at the roofline.

7. Waddle Exteriors

4.8 stars, 260+ Google reviews

Waddle is based in Story City, about 45 minutes north of Des Moines, and holds certifications across three manufacturers: Owens Corning, GAF, and CertainTeed. That multi-brand setup is rare in Iowa and useful if you want apples-to-apples shingle comparisons from one contractor. Their natural territory is Ankeny and the north metro, so Des Moines proper sits at the edge of their range. Factor in the drive for follow-up service calls.

8. Andrew's Roofing Company

4.9 stars, 160+ Google reviews

A Des Moines shop on 2nd Avenue holding GAF Master Elite certification, which puts them in rare company for a smaller outfit. The review count is more modest than the big names on this list, but the 4.9 average is consistent, and the certification means GAF has audited their installs. A solid pick for homeowners who want a smaller local company without giving up a manufacturer-backed warranty.

9. For Sure Roofing

4.9 stars, 125+ Google reviews

A north-side Des Moines company on NE 14th Street with a strong 4.9 average. Smaller footprint than the top of this list, but the reviews read like neighbors recommending neighbors, which is exactly what you want from a local shop. Worth including in a three-bid comparison, especially on the north side.

10. VanWeelden Co.

4.7 stars, about 40 Google reviews

VanWeelden is a smaller Des Moines operation on the north side that has never run a big review-generation machine. The kind of contractor you find through a neighbor rather than an ad. The review footprint is thin compared to everyone above, so do your homework: ask for recent local references and proof of insurance, same as you would with any smaller shop.

11. Premier Roofing Company

4.3 stars, about 70 Google reviews (local branch)

Premier is a national roofing company with a branch in Johnston. The upside of national scale is process: standardized installs, established supplier relationships, and they're not going out of business next year. The honest read is that their local rating trails every Iowa-based company on this list, and with a branch model, the crew on your roof answers to a regional office, not an owner whose name is on the truck. If you like big-company structure, get their bid alongside two locals and compare line by line.

One more worth knowing about

If you're specifically pricing a metal roof, BW Exterior Solutions & Metal Roofing out of Granger focuses on metal systems on the northwest side of the metro. They're a newer Google listing without a public review history yet, so treat them like any young company: references, proof of insurance, and a written scope. If you're weighing metal against asphalt, our metal roofing page covers the cost-of-ownership math.

What to do before you sign anything

Whoever you call, a few rules protect you in this market.

Get the inspection in writing, with photos. Any reputable Des Moines roofer will document damage in detail, not just say "yeah, you've got hail." If insurance is involved, the photos and a written scope are what your adjuster needs.

Verify insurance and licensing. A legitimate contractor hands over a certificate of insurance without a fuss. Hesitation is your answer.

Ask about both warranties. The manufacturer warranty covers the shingles; the workmanship warranty covers the install. Certified contractors (OC Platinum, GAF Master Elite) can register extended system warranties that uncertified ones can't.

Don't sign at the front door. Every hail event sends a wave of out-of-state door-knockers through Des Moines neighborhoods, and "we'll cover your deductible" offers are insurance fraud in Iowa. A real local roofer is happy to leave a written estimate and give you time to think.
